Direct Coal Liquefaction – History and Recent Development in China

Abstract:
China is practicing DCL technology at industrial levels. The first production line at a scale of 1 Mt-oil/y started operation on Dec. 30, 2008, which is the only industrial plant in the world in past 60 years. This project stimulated DCL research in science and engineering in China. This talk will analyze DCL technologies and fundamental chemistry and engineering information gained in the past, suggest challenges need to be addressed for a higher efficiency and reliability, and present researches have been carried out in China.

In addition, Dr. Liu will also talk about how to work in/collaborate with Chinese Universities.

About Prof. Zhenyu Liu:
Dr. Zhenyu Liu received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Taiyuan University of Technology in 1982. He studied in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Pittsburgh in 1983-1988 and received a Ph.D. degree. He then worked in the Department of Chemical Engineering, West Virginia University till 1995. He was a professor in the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1995-2006 and the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Coal Conversion in 2002-2006. He jointed Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2007 and has been a professor of Chemical Engineering since then.

Dr. Liu’s research interests include pyrolysis, gasification and liquefaction of coal, catalytic abetments of flue gas pollutants, and calcium carbide production. He published 130 papers in peer reviewed international journals and holds 50 Chinese patents. He was the Regional Editor for the Far East of Fuel Processing Technology (Elsevier) in 2004-2013 and is the Associate Editor of three Chinese journals in chemical engineering and fuels chemistry. He received a number of awards including Outstanding Post-Doctoral Student in Chemical Engineering, American Institute of Chemists Foundation, USA (1995), Heritage Prize for Excellence in Creative Activity, Li Foundation, USA (1996), Outstanding Young Scientist, Qiushi Science & 
Technology Foundation, Hong Kong (2000) and Richard A. Glenn Award, ACS Division of Energy & Fuels (2012). He has been a plenary speaker and invited speaker at various national and international conferences.
